Description
Adventure Summary
A 4–6 hour one-shot adventure for 4–5 characters of 5th level, set in the floating cloud city of Caelum’s Rest. The famous Mirror of Tomorrow has begun showing a crumbling, burning version of the city instead of normal reflections. Two factions — the ruling Cloud Council and the rebellious Sky Corsairs — each seek the party’s aid, blaming the other for the city’s impending doom. But the mirror is not a mere omen: it is a window into a parallel world, and beings from that dying realm are already reaching through. The party must navigate conflicting loyalties, uncover the truth, and decide the fate of two worlds.
Background
Caelum’s Rest drifts above the Eternal Cloudsea, a marvel of ancient magic. Its central plaza houses the Mirror of Tomorrow, an artifact left by the city’s founders. For centuries it showed visitors their own reflections touched with faint, hopeful glimpses of possible futures. Three weeks ago, the mirror changed. Now it shows a city identical to Caelum’s Rest — but shattered, burning, and slowly sinking into an abyss. The citizens are terrified.
Unbeknownst to all, the mirror is a planar bridge to a parallel Caelum’s Rest — one that has already fallen to ruin due to a catastrophic magical war between its own Council and Corsairs. The Reflection, a desperate survivor from that world, has learned to manipulate the mirror’s surface, reaching through to influence minds and replace key figures with doppelgangers from its dying realm. It seeks to bring enough people through to start anew, regardless of the cost to this Caelum’s Rest.
The Cloud Council, led by Archmage Seraphina, believes the mirror’s visions are a warning sent by the founders. They want to shatter the mirror to “seal the omen” — but Seraphina has secretly been replaced by a doppelganger who wants to prevent anyone from discovering the truth.
The Sky Corsairs, led by Captain Zephyr, believe the visions reveal the Council’s secret corruption causing the city’s magic to fail. They want to seize the mirror and use its power to expose the Council. Zephyr is genuine and uncorrupted — but his first mate, Lieutenant Gale, has also been replaced by a doppelganger, subtly driving the Corsairs toward violent confrontation to create chaos the Reflection can exploit.
The Hook
The party arrives at Caelum’s Rest via sky-skiff or teleportation circle, seeking supplies, information, or passage. As they enter the Plaza of Echoes, a crowd has gathered around the Mirror of Tomorrow — a towering oval of pristine silver ten feet high, framed by floating motes of blue light. The normally placid surface churns with images of familiar streets collapsing, towers crumbling, and shadowy figures dragging citizens into the dark. A child in the crowd screams, pointing: for one heartbeat, a shadowy hand reaches out of the mirror’s surface before snapping back. The crowd panics.
Before the party can react, an Air Elemental — formed from the mirror’s agitated magic — tears free from the glass and begins rampaging through the plaza. Guards are helpless. The party must act.
