A 4-6 session campaign for 4-5 characters of levels 5-10, set in the frozen tundra of Gelidrin. An ancient white dragon slumbers beneath the ice, bound by a centuries-old pact to contain a horror sealed in the depths. As the pact’s expiration nears, fear and paranoia consume the scattered tribes, turning them against one another in a desperate struggle for survival. The heroes must unearth the true history, navigate a maelstrom of fanaticism and ambition, and decide the fate of the land—before the true threat beneath awakens.

Background

The land of Gelidrin is a vast, windswept tundra locked in perpetual winter. For generations, the nomadic tribes have eked out a harsh existence, guided by traditions they no longer understand. Five centuries ago, the white dragon Vistrix terrorized the region until a cabal of powerful shamans—led by the frost druid Rime—brokered a desperate compact. They bound Vistrix to a magical slumber beneath the ice, but not as a punishment. The dragon became a living seal, supressing a far greater danger: an ancient aboleth named Vorathax that had risen from the Underdark to enslave the surface. Vistrix agreed to serve as warden in exchange for regular tributes and the promise that the compact would one day be renegotiated. The shamans concealed the aboleth’s existence from their people, fearing that knowing the truth might break their fragile unity. They crafted the Heart of Rime, a crystalline focus that could renew the seal, and hid it in a secret shrine. However, time eroded memory into myth. The tribes forgot Vorathax entirely and came to view Vistrix as a slumbering doom, destined to wake and destroy them when the “false peace” ended. Now, the five hundred years are nearly up. The thin threads of the pact fray, and both the dragon’s restlessness and the aboleth’s psychic emanations begin to leak through. Nightmares spread, tempers flare, and old alliances crumble. The real threat is no longer the dragon—it is the terror and suspicion that Vorathax sows from its icy prison.
