Adventure Summary

A 4–6 session campaign for 3–5 characters of levels 5–8, set in the coastal town of Port Dreadfall. A blood-red prophecy appears on the temple walls overnight, foretelling the return of an ancient evil from the legendary Cove of Lost Sails. The party must delve into the hidden pirate cavern behind a crimson waterfall, confront undead buccaneers and psychic horrors, and face the truth: the true threat is not the aboleth lurking in the depths, but the wave of fear and paranoid hysteria sweeping through the town. Player choices determine whether Port Dreadfall unites against the darkness or destroys itself from within.

Background

Port Dreadfall clings to the storm-lashed cliffs of the Meridian Coast, a haven for traders, fishers, and smugglers. A century ago, the notorious pirate Captain Darrow—called the Drowned King—ruled the nearby Cove of Lost Sails, a concealed lagoon hidden behind a thundering waterfall. His reign ended when a betrayed crewman cursed him and his treasure, drowning the cove in necromantic energy. The pirates rose as undying skeletons, and the waterfall began to run red at times, staining local legend. The cove was forgotten by all but a few old salts.

Beneath the cove, in a submerged temple predating all recorded history, an aboleth slumbered. The blood curse awakened it prematurely. Calling itself the Mind Below, the aboleth has spent decades regaining strength and subtly extending its psychic influence over the region. It learned that fear is its sharpest weapon—the townsfolk are already superstitious, and it can amplify their dread and divisions until they hand over their wills willingly. Now it is ready to act. It has animated the pirate dead as its thralls, planted a shape-shifting servitor among the townsfolk, and inscribed a terrifying blood prophecy on the temple wall to stoke the fires of paranoia. The “monster” is only the catalyst; the real catastrophe will be the mobs, witch-hunts, and schisms that tear Port Dreadfall apart long before the aboleth ever surfaces.

The town is currently governed by Mayor Valerius Blackwood, whose family once hunted pirates. The temple of the Tidemother (a local sea goddess) is the spiritual center, now ground zero for the panic. A booming economy has drawn new settlers, but old families still remember the Drowned King’s raids. Secrets buzz in the Rusty Hook tavern, and smuggling routes through sea caves are known to a few outcasts. The stage is set for heroes who can see past the blood and shadow.
