Adventure Summary

A campaign framework for four to six 4-hour sessions, designed for four to five characters of levels 7-10. In the criminal underworld of the sprawling medieval city of Gallowspire, a reality-warping relic called the Unmoored Heart has been unearthed beneath a thieves’ quarter. As gangs, cults, corrupt nobles, and ancient powers race to control it, the buried dungeon around the artifact awakens, adapts, and begins learning from every intruder who enters its living halls.

Background

Gallowspire is a city of towers, bridges, canals, markets, shrines, and locked doors. Above ground, it is ruled by magistrates, guild charters, and noble houses; below ground, it belongs to smugglers, assassins, fence-kings, forbidden priests, tunnel cartels, and debt collectors with private prisons. Everyone in Gallowspire owes someone, and every oath, secret, or corpse eventually finds its way into the Undervaults, a buried maze of ancient sewers, crypt roads, collapsed cellars, and forgotten sanctums beneath the city.

Long before Gallowspire was built, a nameless civilization constructed a prison-temple beneath the hill where the city now stands. They bound an alien intelligence there: not a creature in the ordinary sense, but a thinking architecture grown from stone, memory, hunger, and magical law. At its center they sealed the Unmoored Heart, a fist-sized black crystal veined with shifting silver. The Heart distorts distance, time, gravity, identity, and desire. For centuries, the prison slept.

Three weeks ago, miners working for a smuggling syndicate broke through an old warded wall. They found chambers full of glassy stone, whispering doors, and coins from dead empires. One miner touched the Unmoored Heart and returned speaking with three voices. Since then, parts of the city have begun to change: alleys loop into themselves, victims wake with memories that are not theirs, rooms grow teeth of stone, and criminals dream of a stairway descending into a warm red dark. The dungeon beneath Gallowspire is awake. Worse, every group that enters teaches it new tricks.
