Adventure Summary
This campaign framework is designed for a party of 4-5 characters and is best suited for levels 4-8 across 5 sessions of roughly 4 hours each, though it can comfortably expand to 6 sessions if the group enjoys investigation, faction play, and urban exploration. In the canal city of Veyra, a thieves’ guild war spills from the moonlit bridges into flooded cellars, hidden markets, and shuttered shrines. The conflict seems to center on a ruthless guildmaster hoarding a supernatural mirror, but that mirror reflects a version of the city that should not exist, and the deeper truth is that the so-called villain is guarding a breach to something ancient, hungry, and far worse than any criminal empire.
Background
Veyra is a city built in layers. At the waterline stand lamp-lit quays, merchant counting houses, shrines to fortune, and district bridges crowded with hawkers. Beneath that surface lies the true engine of the city: culverts widened into smugglers’ routes, drowned foundations turned into hidden vaults, and entire black markets operating under the echo of passing barges. Wealth moves through Veyra by canal, and so does crime. For generations the city’s shadow economy was managed by a loose accord among smugglers, fences, burglars, and informants known informally as the Market Compact. Open war was rare, because every guild understood a simple truth: blood in the water draws attention from both the law above and things below.
Long before the current guild struggle, Veyra’s oldest quarter was built atop ruins belonging to a vanished order of wardens and diviners. Their purpose was not to defend the city from invasion, but to contain an otherworldly conjunction hidden under the cisterns: a reflective fault where light, memory, and water met. In that place, polished stone and still black water could show not merely a face, but alternate streets, absent towers, dead loved ones, and futures that never happened. The wardens learned that the reflections were not illusions alone. Something on the other side could see back. They forged a system of mirrored seals, sanctified locks, and ritual observation to keep the breach dormant. Over centuries the wardens disappeared, their records were scattered, and the vaults became rumors.
In the present day, the Compact is breaking apart. A rising faction called the Velvet Knife has begun raiding hidden markets, assassinating informants, and stealing old maps, silver-backed mirrors, and relic keys. Their declared target is Seressa Vale, the reclusive master of the Gray Ledger, a powerful smuggling guild that controls customs fraud, bribed ferrymen, and much of the city’s contraband. Seressa has answered with brutal force, and every whisper in Veyra says the guild war is about greed, revenge, or succession. Only a few people know the truth: Seressa discovered the buried mirror-vault years ago and has spent a fortune keeping its seals intact. The Velvet Knife believes she is concealing a source of impossible power. They are right. They are also dangerously wrong about who will control it once it is opened.
