Adventure Summary

The Blackroot Covenant is a 5th-level campaign framework for a party of 4-5 characters, designed to begin at level 3 and conclude around level 7 after 5 sessions of roughly 4 hours each. The story centers on a druid grove poisoned by a necromantic blight, a trade road choked by fear, and a chain of caravan ambushes carried out by unnatural creatures that no witness can properly name. At first the party seems headed toward a straightforward hunt for the grove’s corrupted warden, but the deeper they go, the more they discover that the “villain” is committing grim acts to hold back something much worse: a black dragon bound beneath the roots, slowly feeding on death, memory, and rot until it can rise again.

Background

Long before the present age, the region now called the Hollow March was a wet, fertile borderland where old forests met caravan roads and river trade. At its center stood the Verdant Lantern, a druid grove grown around a sink of clear springwater and an immense root-crowned hill known as Heartroot Hollow. The druids of the Lantern were not merely gardeners or priests. They acted as judges of seasons, custodians of burial grounds, and keepers of old pacts between settlements and the wild. When wars swept through the region generations ago, the grove became a refuge and a place of mourning. The dead were interred in root-cairns beneath sacred soil so that life might feed on death without being mastered by it.

In that same forgotten war, a young black dragon named Sszareth descended on the March to claim it as a future lair. The druids could not kill the dragon outright, but with the aid of local knights and sacrificial rites they trapped it beneath Heartroot Hollow, pinning it in a flooded cavern and binding the chamber with living roots, standing stones, and funerary wards. The prison held, but the ritual was imperfect. The dragon did not die. It slept in bitterness, drinking seepage from tombs, dreaming through stagnant water, and learning to whisper into the fears of those buried above.

In recent years, prosperity returned. Caravans multiplied, roadwardens cut new trails, and a powerful trade concern called the Ashen Ledger Consortium began pressing for deeper access through the old forest. Surveyors broke burial mounds, loggers disturbed marker stones, and scavengers looted forgotten cairns for relics. The old wards weakened. Now a black stain has spread beneath bark and soil. Deer give birth to stillborn fawns with sap-black tongues. Mushrooms bloom from burial stones overnight. The dead fail to rest. The once-hidden prison under the grove is cracking, and every corpse left within the blighted bounds feeds the creature below.
