Adventure Summary
This campaign framework is designed for a party of 4-5 characters beginning at 4th level and reaching 8th or 9th level by the finale, over 5-6 sessions of roughly 4 hours each. In the canal city of Blackwake, a quiet thieves’ guild war becomes public chaos when caravans entering the city are ambushed by bizarre predators and stolen goods vanish into forgotten flood tunnels below the shadow markets. The characters are drawn into a struggle between rival guilds, corrupt merchants, and an ancient intelligence awakening beneath the city: a dungeon that is not merely inhabited, but alive, observant, and rapidly learning from every intrusion.
Background
Blackwake is a city built where three trade rivers split into a maze of canals before meeting the sea. Its wealth comes from movement: spice barges, caravan ferries, lock taxes, hidden tolls, and the night markets that bloom under hanging lanterns once the lawful shops close. By day, nobles and chartered factors boast of order. By night, masked brokers, smugglers, river pilots, and thieves’ guild agents run the true economy. The city survives because every faction steals just enough from the others to keep the whole machine hungry, balanced, and profitable.
That balance began to break months ago when dredgers reopened an old floodgate beneath the Lantern Weir district. The workmen found a buried complex of ancient stone chambers older than Blackwake itself, cut with strange channels that drank river water and carried whispers farther than sound should travel. A small guild crew exploring the ruins disappeared, but some of their cargo returned: crates carefully restacked in locked vaults, ledgers rewritten in unknown handwriting, and dead scouts found arranged as if posed for inspection. Soon after, creatures never before seen in the city began striking caravans on the roads and towpaths outside the walls. Some were ankhegs bursting from embankments. Others were animated market effigies and sewer-haunting predators driven into coordinated attacks. Something below was studying supply lines.
The truth is older and worse than a simple monster lair. In the drowned foundations beneath Blackwake slumbers an aboleth called Ulthess, once worshiped in an elder river-cult. It has survived in stagnant caverns for centuries, gathering fragments of memory from the water itself. The ruins around it are semi-organic stone, an adaptive complex that responds to command, fear, repeated movement, and spilled blood. Ulthess has begun using guild greed as a lever, nudging rival thieves into open conflict while the dungeon absorbs tactics, voices, and routines from each trespasser. Every incursion teaches it. Locks shift. Bridges retract. Guardians change positions. The city thinks it is fighting over smuggling routes, but beneath that war a living labyrinth is rehearsing how to consume an entire economy.
