Adventure Summary

This campaign framework is designed for 4-5 characters starting at 4th level and ending around 7th or 8th level over 5-6 sessions of about 4 hours each. The adventure unfolds on a windswept moor where an unnatural storm has raged for three weeks without pause, trapping travelers, villagers, and the party in the shadow of Gloam Thorne Manor, a noble estate locked in eternal twilight. On the surface, the campaign promises a haunted-house mystery: vanished servants, tolling bells with no visible hand, lights in shuttered windows, and a ghostly figure walking the upper galleries. In truth, the greatest danger is not any single monster but the fear that turns hungry refugees into informants, protectors into tyrants, and every closed door into an accusation. The party must solve the haunting, expose false faces, and decide whether the manor should be cleansed, claimed, or sealed forever.

Background

Generations ago, Gloam Thorne Manor stood at the edge of Blackmere Moor, a place of peat bogs, wind-carved standing stones, and old roads that vanished under fog as easily as under rain. The Thorne family made its wealth by keeping those roads open. Their beacon tower, chapel bell, and posted riders guided merchants, pilgrims, and soldiers through land that could swallow a cart a mile from shelter. The manor’s masters became known not merely for hospitality, but for vigilance: they used trained wardens, shrine keepers, weather lore, and careful watchfires to keep the moor from becoming a graveyard.

That duty changed when Lady Ysilde Thorne, the most gifted scholar of the line, began studying ancient weather records and arcane correspondences hidden beneath the manor chapel. She learned that Blackmere’s storms were not wholly natural. The moor rested atop an old convergence of elemental force, a place where wind, rain, and static gathered with unusual strength. Rather than flee, Ysilde tried to master it. She laid Alarm wards across the manor, sealed private archives with Arcane Lock, and raised the tower into a great lightning rod from which she could call and redirect storms. For a time, the system worked. The manor prospered. Travelers called it a miracle house: a place where thunder broke overhead but the candles still burned steady at supper.

Then the house died from within. A season of failed crops and sickness sent too many desperate people to the gates. Rumors spread that the Thornes kept food hidden. Rumors spread that someone in the household was poisoning stores. Rumors spread that one of the servants was not a servant at all. Neighbors accused neighbors. Family retainers drew steel over whispers. Before any truth could be settled, blood was shed in the halls. Lady Ysilde vanished from public sight. By dawn, the manor had shut its gates, and the moor entered a long decline. The surviving stories disagree about what happened: some blame a curse, some a shapechanging infiltrator, some a noble family that turned cruel, and some a ghost who still punishes suspicion with storm.

Now, after years of ruin and uneasy silence, the storm has returned in full force and has not ceased for three weeks. Lightning crawls across the same tower every night. Twilight never deepens into true darkness and never lifts into day. Refugees from surrounding crofts crowd whatever shelter they can find. Roads have washed away. Boats refuse the flooded mere. Into this crisis has come Edda Vane, a learned but ruthless archmage who believes the old manor can be used to prove a terrible principle: fear is a stronger instrument of rule than open war. She has reawakened the manor’s weather workings, brought a hidden Mirror of Life Trapping out of the family vaults, and allied with Morrow Vale, a doppelganger who once survived the manor’s first collapse and now delights in making every face suspect. Their plans would fail if the trapped people trusted one another. That is why the haunting grows louder each night.
