Description
Adventure Summary
This campaign framework is designed for a party of 4-5 characters beginning at 5th level and concluding around 8th or 9th level over 5 sessions of roughly 4 hours each. The heroes are drawn to a once-sacred druid grove now choked by a spreading necromantic blight just as an ancient pact nears its end. What first appears to be a struggle against a ruthless necromancer becomes a harder moral crisis: the supposed villain has been committing grim acts to contain something older, stranger, and far more catastrophic than the blight itself. The campaign emphasizes investigation, wilderness travel, shifting loyalties, difficult bargains, and a final choice that determines whether the land is healed, condemned, or transformed.
Background
Long before the local villages were founded, the valley called Green Hollow was a place where life gathered in impossible abundance. Springs ran clear in every season, animals migrated there to calve and nest, and an immense ring of elder trees marked the heart of a druid sanctuary known as the Verdant Crown. The oldest songs say the grove stood atop a wound in the world: a tear where death did not pass cleanly onward, but lingered in roots, water, and memory. The first druids learned that simple purification could not close the wound. Instead, they forged a pact with a mortal guardian willing to bear the burden of death, accepting a sacred office that would keep the rot contained below the grove.
The pact had a cost. Each century, when the moon of reaping hung low and red, the guardian had to be renewed through a rite called the Quiet Paying. The rite did not merely demand blood; it demanded consent, witness, and a transfer of duty. One soul would accept the burden of becoming the next keeper of the threshold below the grove, preserving the balance between the living forest and the imprisoned dead beneath it. So long as the pact was honored, the wound remained sealed. The guardian became feared, then misunderstood, then hated. Over generations, the softer parts of the story were forgotten, while the horror remained.
Now the century has nearly turned. The current pact-keeper, Lady Merrow Voss, has outlived every ally who knew the truth. In local memory she is no guardian at all, but a grave-witch who steals corpses, commands undead laborers, and forbids anyone from entering the inner grove. The druid circles have splintered over whether the old bargain should continue. Some want to destroy Merrow and end the shameful practice forever. Others fear that the blight creeping through Green Hollow, blackening bark and raising unquiet dead, is proof that the pact cannot simply be abandoned. In truth, the seal is failing, and beneath the roots a buried intelligence stirs: a death-saturated aboleth known in old tablets as the Drowned Memory, an ancient thing that feeds on grief, preserves consciousness in slime and stagnant water, and dreams of remaking the valley into a mire where no soul can truly die.
