Description
Adventure Summary
Deep in the rain-choked Xatramba Basin, caravans vanish along a newly reopened trade road. Survivors speak of silent shapes moving through the canopy, emerald darts, and scaled faces glimpsed in lightning. The five locations below form a connected jungle region centered on an ancient ziggurat guarded by serpentfolk, poison traps, and creatures warped by buried magic. Use them as a short expedition, a sandbox detour, or the spine of a 3rd- to 7th-level adventure.
The apparent villain is Ssarthul, a serpentfolk priest who has ordered the attacks. He is cruel, secretive, and willing to kill outsiders, but his raids are meant to keep treasure hunters from breaking the final seal beneath the ziggurat. The true threat is Umazha, a trapped spirit naga whose dreams poison beasts, minds, and water throughout the basin.
Background
Centuries ago, Xatramba was a serpentfolk sanctuary built over a cavern where Umazha, an oracle-devouring spirit naga, was bound inside a jade reliquary. The serpentfolk became wardens, raising a stepped temple above the prison and surrounding it with shrines, false trails, venom cisterns, and ritual guardians. Over time, disease and civil war shattered their numbers.
Recently, a merchant prince named Callo Vey opened a caravan road through the basin after buying an old map from a tomb robber. His crews uncovered outer markers and stole jade tiles from warding walls. Umazha stirred, sending dreams to beasts and treasure seekers alike. Ssarthul’s remaining serpentfolk now ambush caravans to retrieve stolen ward-stones before the prison fails completely.
