Adventure Summary
On the frozen shore of Vhalosk Reach, the dead rise from salt-crusted graves whenever the black tide crawls away from the ice shelf. They do not attack at first. They walk toward the same place: a glacier hollow where an ancient white dragon, Ysgrathul the Still Maw, sleeps beneath miles of blue ice. This NPC Pack presents five figures caught between fear, greed, faith, and survival as two rival factions secretly push the heroes toward opposite conclusions.
The pack works as a mystery, diplomatic conflict, or survival horror scenario. The characters can serve as patrons, suspects, guides, rivals, or future allies. The meaningful choice is not simply whether to destroy the undead, but whether to preserve the dragon’s prison, exploit its power, or expose both factions before their manipulation cracks the glacier open.
Background
Vhalosk Reach was once a coastal pilgrimage route where dragon-worshiping clans left their dead in tide-graves carved into the permafrost. Centuries ago, Ysgrathul was lured beneath the glacier by mystics who used tidal magic, sonic resonance, and a buried stellar seal to keep the dragon asleep. Now the polar moon’s orbit has shifted, pulling the tide farther out than anyone alive has seen. Each low tide exposes old grave tunnels, and the dead rise to repair, protect, or sabotage pieces of the ancient seal.
Two factions are manipulating outsiders. The Hearthchain Compact, a pragmatic settlement council, wants the party to believe the undead are servants of the dragon and must be destroyed. In truth, the Compact has been mining pieces of the seal for starship-grade crystals. The Ebon Tidemark, a secretive cult of mystics and scholars, claims to protect the seal, but they are guiding the undead to awaken Ysgrathul just enough to bargain with it. Both factions feed the heroes selective truths, hoping the party will eliminate the other side before discovering the full danger.
