Adventure Summary
High in the mountains, the Monastery of the Perpetual Peak was a place of peace and meditation—until a cursed mirror awoke. Now the monks whisper of doubles who wear familiar faces, and travelers vanish on the holy path. The characters must unravel the mirror’s grip on this isolated community and confront a threat that feeds on the very fear it creates. The true foe is not the shadowy reflections, but the paranoia and mistrust that threaten to tear everyone apart.
Background
The monastery was built over older, forgotten ruins. Decades ago, the first abbot unearthed a flawless silver mirror and named it the Mirror of Clear Sight, believing it a gift from the gods. In truth, it was a vessel for a malevolent force that traps a person’s darkest fears and gives them tangible form—an “echo.” The echo wants only to replace its original, stalking them and sowing dread until the victim turns on their companions or is slain, allowing the echo to take their place.
Three months ago, a tremor cracked the mirror’s ancient seal. The echoes began to appear. Some monks were killed and replaced; others were unjustly accused by a terrified Abbot Severin, who now sees imposters in every shadow. Guestmaster Brother Aldwin managed to smuggle out a plea for help before being locked away. The monastery now teeters on the edge of a self-inflicted massacre.
The Hook
The characters receive a crumpled note: “I beg you, all is not well in this holy place. A mirror speaks lies and shows us monsters. People are disappearing. The Abbot is no longer himself. Please help us before there is no one left.” A simple map leads to a cliffside trail and the monastery gates. Alternatively, the party might encounter a panicked young monk fleeing down the mountain road, screaming of reflections that walk and kill. He can act as a guide and reinforce the urgency.
