This one-page encounter is designed for a party of 3-5 characters level 3-5. The party is hired by a salvage crew to investigate a derelict research station, the Stardust Echo, orbiting the gas giant Xylos. Initial scans reveal a strange energy signature and faint recordings of panicked scientists. The station was researching a newly discovered bioluminescent alien fungus, dubbed “Echo Bloom,” which exhibits unsettling psychic properties. The twist reveals the fungus isn’t just emitting signals, it’s actively reshaping memories and perceptions, trapping the researchers within a shared, hallucinatory reality.

Background

The Stardust Echo belonged to Chronos Research Labs, a privately funded organization specializing in xenobiological studies and temporal anomalies. They were aggressively pursuing research into the Echo Bloom, believing it held the key to manipulating memories and potentially even time itself. Funding dried up abruptly six months prior to the station’s abandonment, coinciding with reports of increasingly erratic behavior from the research team. Official records were scrubbed, and the station was declared lost with no survivors.
