Adventure Summary

This encounter is designed for a party of 3-5 characters of levels 3-5. The party is hired by a concerned scholar, Professor Eldrin, to investigate the sudden appearance of a shimmering, obsidian shard unearthed near the Whispering Fen – a notoriously dangerous swamp known for its hag covens. The shard is warping reality, causing localized temporal distortions, phantom echoes, and unsettling vegetation growth. The deeper the party ventures, the more they realize the swamp itself is actively reacting to the shard’s influence, and something far older and more intelligent than a simple hag coven is at play.

Background

The Whispering Fen has always been a place of unnatural occurrences, dominated by the remnants of an ancient, forgotten civilization that worshipped primal spirits of the swamp. Hag covens, known as the “Rootbound Coven,” have long made their home here, exploiting the area’s potent magical energies. Local legends speak of a ‘Heartstone’ – a shard of solidified temporal energy – buried deep within the fen, capable of manipulating time and space. Recent excavations by Professor Eldrin’s team have inadvertently disturbed the Heartstone, unleashing its chaotic effects and awakening something dormant within the swamp’s core.
