This one-page encounter is designed for a party of 3-5 characters of levels 3-5. The party is investigating rumors of missing villagers from the isolated mountain monastery of St. Silas, perched precariously on the Cliff of Whispers. Locals speak of disappearances coinciding with the full moon, and a palpable sense of unease hangs over the settlement. The true danger isn’t a monstrous creature, but the escalating fear and paranoia among the monks, fueled by a single, unsettling discovery – a meticulously crafted illusion of a monstrous form projected onto the cliff face during the full moon’s light.

Background

St. Silas Monastery has existed for centuries, dedicated to a forgotten deity of protection and vigilance. The monks, known as the Silent Guardians, traditionally patrol the surrounding mountain passes, offering aid to travelers and guarding against threats. However, in recent months, a creeping dread has settled over the monastery. Brother Silas, the current Abbot, has become increasingly erratic, obsessed with maintaining the illusion, and the monks are growing increasingly withdrawn and suspicious of each other. The monastery’s isolation has always been a strength, but now it’s amplifying the whispers and anxieties.
